What Are You Watering?

Every day, you’re watering something. You water your habits through repetition. You water your relationships with attention. You water your faith by spending time in God’s Word and prayer. You even water your worries by dwelling on them The question isn’t whether you’re watering something. The question is: What are you helping grow? A small… Continue reading What Are You Watering?

PLOD ON

Steady faithfulness for pastors and leaders.

Throughout my years in ministry, I have encouraged pastors and leaders to embrace the power of steady, faithful perseverance. William Carey, known as the Father of Modern Missions, once said, “I can plod. I can persevere in any definite pursuit. To this I owe everything.”

That is why PLOD ON has become my motto. It reminds me to keep trusting God, keep learning, keep serving, and keep going when progress feels slow or unseen. PLOD also represents four foundational areas of my teaching: Preaching, Leadership, Organizational Health, and Development.

About Dan Summerlin

With over 40 years of pastoral ministry, I’ve had the privilege of serving, leading, and walking alongside countless individuals and communities in their spiritual journeys. Now retired from full-time pastoral leadership, my heart remains fully engaged in empowering others.

I currently focus my time on coaching and mentoring pastors and ministry leaders, helping them navigate the unique challenges of leadership while maintaining a deep, authentic connection to their calling. Whether through one-on-one coaching, conference leadership, or classroom instruction as an adjunct professor, I love investing in the next generation of leaders. For the past 15 years, I have led monthly mentoring groups for pastors and facilitated meetings aimed at equipping them to thrive in their leadership roles.”

Ian P. Carrico

West Region Consultant Kentucky Baptist Convention

I first met Dan Summerlin in 2013 while working on my undergrad degree. He graciously offered to answer my questions for a paper to write on being an effective evangelistic church. In the course of our discussion, Dan encouraged me to find a regular mentor to help me grow to the next stages of ministry. I was to evaluate where I am, find someone serving where I wanted to be, and ask them to mentor me to the next stage of ministry. Every year after I began pastoring, I would find a mentor and place into practice what I learned from them. After 8 years of pastoring, I felt I was at the place where I needed Dan’s help and he graciously accepted. Through reading, self-evaluating, and asking him questions, Dan has challenged me to grow as a leader and to put into practice skills that help in daily life as well as work. His friendship has been a blessing. I would strongly encourage anyone who wants to grow in their position to trust Dan to guide your next steps toward success. Dan, thank you for taking time to pour into me,
